PrivadoVPN (Free) Features

4/5

Data Limits

With PrivadoVPN Free, you can enjoy 10GB of secure internet access every month. This amount of data is sufficient for 20 hours of streaming or 120 hours of browsing online. If you exceed your monthly limit, PrivadoVPN won’t disconnect you completely. Instead, you’ll be connected to an emergency server at slower speeds.

Number of Servers and Locations

PrivadoVPN‘s free plan users can access 12 servers in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This is a more significant number of server locations than other free VPNs offer.

The provider uses physical servers, which are more stable and secure than virtual servers. With a physical server, the resources (CPU, RAM, storage) are not shared with other systems, resulting in better performance, particularly for demanding applications or databases. Additionally, a physical server is more secure because it is not sharing resources with other systems.

Encryption and Security

With PrivadoVPN, users can enjoy multiple layers of security for their online activities. First, it operates under a strict no-log policy, meaning it should not track or store your online activity. This component is critical for any VPN service, as it guarantees that your browsing data remains inaccessible to anyone – even the provider.

In addition to employing safe encryption algorithms, PrivadoVPN gives customers a choice of popular VPN protocols, including OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard. Users now have the freedom to determine the ideal speed-security ratio for their online activities.

A useful kill switch option is available in the free plan. If your connection to the PrivadoVPN client is suddenly lost, this program automatically pauses your online activities to stop any data transmission that isn’t protected.

PrivadoVPN offers features like DNS leak protection and IP leak protection for in-app security. These ensure that your information isn’t unintentionally sent over the internet, where malicious parties could intercept it.

Although PrivadoVPN doesn’t offer a VPN audit, its security procedures are comparable to many other providers, which may worry some potential customers. Other VPNs, such as NordVPN or ExpressVPN, have routinely had their no-log policies reviewed by other organisations, adding to the trust in their privacy practices. However, consumers may feel more secure knowing that PrivadoVPN is based in Switzerland, a country renowned for its stringent privacy rules. It’s also important to note that the business has an open philosophy and claims to own much of its equipment, employ the newest protocols, and have the best architecture in the market.

Unblocking Capabilities

PrivadoVPN Free allows you to unblock popular streaming services such as Netflix, Disney Plus, and Amazon Prime. This feature is typically only available in premium programs offered by the best VPN providers.

PrivadoVPN (Free) Performance Tests

3.5/5

Speed Test

We tested the download speed, upload speed and latency of PrivadoVPN‘s free servers. We ran the tests on a Fire TV Stick 4K Max, connected via 5ghz Wi-Fi and the speed test website speedtest.net.

Though a decrease in internet speed is expected when using a VPN, large drops can negatively impact your streaming or browsing experience. Below are the results of our tests.

Location Download Speed Upload Speed Latency
No VPN 145 Mbps 239 Mbps 1.5ms
UK to UK 20 Mbps 70 Mbps 19ms
UK to France 17 Mbps 65 Mbps 28ms
UK to United States 17 Mbps 59 Mbps 354ms

We were disappointed with the outcomes of our tests when we connected to PrivadoVPN‘s free servers. When connected to our closest server (UK), our speeds were reduced significantly by 86.20%.

However, when connected to a US server, we could browse and watch in HD uninterrupted. Although slower than other free VPN providers, overall, we considered this provider’s speeds satisfactory.

DNS Leak Test

We used IPLeak.net to check for DNS leaks, which can reveal a user’s location even when connected to a VPN. The screenshot confirms that no DNS leaks were found when connected to one of PrivadoVPN‘s free servers.

PrivadoVPN (Free) Breaches and Audits

With its 2019 launch, PrivadoVPN is relatively new to the VPN industry. Although it promises to follow a stringent no-logs policy, it hasn’t had its rules independently audited as of yet. On the other hand, several of its rivals held out until later in their careers before doing this.

PrivadoVPN hasn’t experienced any publicly reported data breaches this far.

PrivadoVPN (Free) Apps and Compatibility

4/5

PrivadoVPN‘s free service is compatible with a wide range of devices, making it stand out from other providers who do not offer apps for specific devices, such as Fire TV/Android TV.

Supported devices include Windows (7-10), MacOS (High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, and Big Sur), Chrome and Linux computers, and Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari web extensions. Users of the free plan can also download the app on Android or iOS devices, Fire TV, and Android TV.

Fire TV/Android TV App

The PrivadoVPN app can be used with Fire TV and Android TV streaming devices, but it has limited settings and customisation options. Regrettably, essential features such as a kill switch are not accessible. Nonetheless, you can still tailor your connection by manually choosing the VPN protocol from options like IKEv2, WireGuard, and OpenVPN. The only other customisation settings available are enabling Smart Route (split tunnelling) and Auto Connect.

Desktop/Mobile App

The company offers an excellent user experience with its feature-rich and user-friendly VPN apps for desktop and mobile devices. Once you have downloaded and installed the app, you will be connected to a secure server within minutes. PrivadoVPN automatically encrypts your traffic and hides your IP address for maximum security.

The desktop and mobile apps come with several notable features for a free VPN, such as a kill switch that cuts off your internet connection if the VPN connection drops. Additionally, PrivadoVPN offers highly secure protocols such as WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv22. It provides free users with DNS and IP leak protection and even a tool to check whether these features are working. It’s great to see a free VPN that offers such robust privacy features without requiring an upgrade.

The desktop and mobile apps are intuitively designed with simple navigation. If your needs are straightforward, the Auto Connect option will connect you to your preferred server when you launch the app.

Is PrivadoVPN (Free) Better Than Other Free VPNs?

PrivadoVPN‘s free VPN service stands out among similar services due to its fair and competitive features. It offers a monthly data limit of 10GB, equivalent to Windscribe’s free version, but falls short compared to Proton VPN’s unlimited data.

The provider has 12 servers in different countries, which is fewer than Proton VPN’s 152 servers but better than some of its competitors. PrivadoVPN also supports streaming, a feature lacking in Proton VPN’s free plan.

However, its no-log policy could benefit from an independent audit to instil confidence in users, which Proton VPN and other providers have already done multiple times. The PrivadoVPN free VPN service has both positive and negative aspects, making it a viable option to consider.

Free VPN Servers Countries Data Limit/Month Torrenting Unblocks Streaming
Privado VPN 12 10 10GB No Yes
Hotspot Shield 160+ 1 15GB (can be increased by watching ads) Yes No
Proton VPN 152 3 Unlimited No Some
Windscribe VPN 11 11 2GB-15GB Yes Yes
Hide.me VPN 7 7 10GB Yes No
Atlas VPN 3 3 5GB Yes No

Wrapping Up

PrivadoVPN offers a reliable and hassle-free service. Their free edition has 10GB of monthly data, reliable encryption algorithms, and a rigorous no-log policy. However, Proton VPN may be better if you need unlimited data.

While PrivadoVPN‘s no-log policy has yet to undergo an independent audit, they take user data security seriously. They are based in Switzerland, a country with strict privacy laws, and have features like a kill switch, DNS leak prevention, and IP leak protection. Although streaming is allowed in the free version, it is limited to one device, unlike Windscribe’s unrestricted device option.

PrivadoVPN has 12 servers in various countries, making it more accessible than other free services. Despite being far away, PrivadoVPN‘s connection speed is adequate for streaming videos and unblocking streaming services, although expect a significant decrease in speed. The free VPN is compatible with almost every device and is undoubtedly among the best free VPN options.
